Greece Cyclades
This archipelago of the Aegean Sea sports about 220 islands, peaks of a submerged mountainous terrain (with the exception of the two volcanic islands of Milos and Santorini). And it shows on most of these islands: the island of Folegandros for instance has typical villages like Chora that are built right atop cliffsides, watch out for the drop! The island of Naxos also has beautiful landscapes, such as near the Emery mine or the imposing marble quarry. It also has inspiring history sites such as the Sanudo tower, the Fotodotis monastery, the Belonia tower or the Apollo Temple’s entrance.
Delos may be less popular but it is no less one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. Visits to the Terrace of the Lions, the theatre, the Agora of the Competaliasts or the House of Dionysos are highly recommended, especially if you know a little about Greek myths and history. On the other hand, Milos is more picturesque and more popular, and you will understand one after one glance at port of Adamas or the sleepy yet sunny streets of Plaka in the middle of the island. Another often overlooked destination is Ermoupoli on the island of Syros. Again, a quick look at its Apollo Theatre, Miaoulis Square or the seaside view of Saint Nicholas Cathedral should instantly convince you to make a stop there.
That being said, we could not talk about the Cyclades without mentioning the unavoidable Mykonos and Santorini. The former, the “Island of the Winds”, is a progressive bastion of freedom of world-renowned beaches and charming little streets. Do not miss its impressive monasteries on your way. As for the latter, “a true postcard” could not even start to describe it. Its rocky landscapes like the Caldera and the Skaros Rock offering a stark contrast to the softness of its villages’ blue and white colours and cerulean waters like in Firostefani or Oia. There is also history in the form of the Stoa Basilica of ancient Thera. And during your trip to the Cyclades, among the local specials, you should definitely at least try out Tomatokeftedes (fried tomato balls), Kakavia (fish soup) Lazarakia (small, sweet spice breads) or its renowned Santorini wine.
